Introduction

Dear Groestlers, it goes without saying that 2020 has been a difficult time for millions of people worldwide. The groestlcoin team would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone our best to everyone coping with the direct and indirect effects of COVID-19. Let it bring out the best in us all and show that collectively, we can conquer anything.
The centralised banks and our national governments are facing unprecedented times with interest rates worldwide dropping to record lows in places. Rest assured that this can only strengthen the fundamentals of all decentralised cryptocurrencies and the vision that was seeded with Satoshi's Bitcoin whitepaper over 10 years ago. Despite everything that has been thrown at us this year, the show must go on and the team will still progress and advance to continue the momentum that we have developed over the past 6 years.
In addition to this, we'd like to remind you all that this is Groestlcoin's 6th Birthday release! In terms of price there have been some crazy highs and lows over the years (with highs of around $2.60 and lows of $0.000077!), but in terms of value– Groestlcoin just keeps getting more valuable! In these uncertain times, one thing remains clear – Groestlcoin will keep going and keep innovating regardless. On with what has been worked on and completed over the past few months.

UPDATED - Groestlcoin Core 2.18.2

This is a major release of Groestlcoin Core with many protocol level improvements and code optimizations, featuring the technical equivalent of Bitcoin v0.18.2 but with Groestlcoin-specific patches. On a general level, most of what is new is a new 'Groestlcoin-wallet' tool which is now distributed alongside Groestlcoin Core's other executables.
NOTE: The 'Account' API has been removed from this version which was typically used in some tip bots. Please ensure you check the release notes from 2.17.2 for details on replacing this functionality.

Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server aims to make using Electrum Groestlcoin wallet more secure and more private. It makes it easy to connect your Electrum-GRS wallet to your own full node.
It is an implementation of the Electrum-grs server protocol which fulfils the specific need of using the Electrum-grs wallet backed by a full node, but without the heavyweight server backend, for a single user. It allows the user to benefit from all Groestlcoin Core's resource-saving features like pruning, blocks only and disabled txindex. All Electrum-GRS's feature-richness like hardware wallet integration, multi-signature wallets, offline signing, seed recovery phrases, coin control and so on can still be used, but connected only to the user's own full node.
Full node wallets are important in Groestlcoin because they are a big part of what makes the system be trust-less. No longer do people have to trust a financial institution like a bank or PayPal, they can run software on their own computers. If Groestlcoin is digital gold, then a full node wallet is your own personal goldsmith who checks for you that received payments are genuine.
Full node wallets are also important for privacy. Using Electrum-GRS under default configuration requires it to send (hashes of) all your Groestlcoin addresses to some server. That server can then easily spy on your transactions. Full node wallets like Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server would download the entire blockchain and scan it for the user's own addresses, and therefore don't reveal to anyone else which Groestlcoin addresses they are interested in.
Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can also broadcast transactions through Tor which improves privacy by resisting traffic analysis for broadcasted transactions which can link the IP address of the user to the transaction. If enabled this would happen transparently whenever the user simply clicks "Send" on a transaction in Electrum-grs wallet.
Note: Currently Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can only accept one connection at a time.

Backup
Backup your wallet to prevent losing the RDDs in your wallet! There are two methods to backup, do both. Make new backups if you create a new receiving address!
 
 
   
Boot with only 1 USB drive plugged in:
Make sure only the USB drive (with the swap partition and data partition) is plugged in when you boot up your Raspberry Pi. This to make sure the swap partition (/dev/sda1) is recognized correctly.   If you boot up with multiple USB drives, Lubuntu might see the USB drive with the swap partition as the second drive (instead of the first drive), and ignore the 2 GB swap partition. If this happens, starting Reddcoin can render the Raspberry Pi unresponsive.
   
Connection issues If you have issues syncing the blockchain because you have 0 network connections, please follow the instructions in this thread.
   
Start Reddcoin Core easier
Run a shell script (.sh file), so you can start Reddcoin just by double clicking on an icon on your Desktop.
   
Minimization options
Adjust minimization options, so you can safely press on the X button (the close/exit button on the upper right corner).
   
RealVNC VNC Viewer (client) and VNC Connect (server): To remote connect to the Raspberry Pi, I use VNC Viewer ad VNC Connect from RealVNC.
 
   
Chromium as browser: The updates break Firefox, the browser crashes when you try to run it. Install another browser, Chromium, to solve this issue.
   
Updates / Upgrades
If Software Updater shows up and tells you that there is updated software available, do not install the updates using Software Updater. Use LXTerminal to update Lubuntu.

I want to stake Reddcoins on my Raspberry Pi, but there is no easy to install package for the Reddcoin Core client. I found some tutorials (mentioned at the bottom, under 'credits'), but I still struggled to get the result I wanted. It took some small adjustments, but I got the GUI Wallet of Reddcoin Core working on my Raspberry Pi Model 3B. See the steps below. :).

Even though Raspbian is the primary OS for the Raspberry Pi, it seems that it's not possible to build and compile the Reddcoin wallet software for Raspbian Stretch. However, I got the wallet compiled using Ubuntu MATE.

Downgrade warning

Because release 0.10.0 and later makes use of headers-first synchronization and parallel block download (see further), the block files and databases are not backwards-compatible with pre-0.10 versions of Bitcoin Core or other software:
If you want to be able to downgrade smoothly, make a backup of your entire data directory. Without this your node will need start syncing (or importing from bootstrap.dat) anew afterwards. It is possible that the data from a completely synchronised 0.10 node may be usable in older versions as-is, but this is not supported and may break as soon as the older version attempts to reindex.
This does not affect wallet forward or backward compatibility.

My first experience with bitcoin was NOT positive :( + Questions

After seeing an interesting comment on /funny in which bitcoin currency is used to make tips across reddit I started to investigate and learn about the Bitcoin. I had heard about it before but I didn't know how it worked or what I had to do in order to use it.
A dozen Bitcoin Wiki entries later I download bitcoin-qt and create my first wallet. The system seemed very easy and straightforward and I had already started to apply for "free starter bitcoins" when I met "synchronization".
Now synchronization is not necessarily a deal breaker but it was annoying as hell. I'm using an old computer and it seemed as if it would take at least a day if not more to complete the whole process... and during that time my computer was getting slow as hell.
Now I'm quite a tech savy person and I know why in this P2P based system this is important, but for anyone else this would be unacceptable. Imagine elder people or not so tech savy persons trying out the system for the first time and noticing that they can't use it without occupying 2+ GiB of their HardDrive and having to wait a lot.
I did not complete the sync and tried to use the multibit instead. But since I had already applied to the Free starter bitcoins on some websites I wanted to keep my old wallet. I try to look for an import/export button but it seems that Bitcoin-qt doesn't support exportation and I needed to use a third party application called pywallet (command line!) to export my wallet and convert it into another plaintext format since the format used by bitcoin-qt was not supported by multibit.
And one would assume that the first thing you do when creating such a currency is to define a standard for the wallet and the applications. Again, I know how to use the command line but anyone who doesn't and who just wants to try out the system for the first time would be inmediately turned off by this limitation.
These are all issues that need to be fixed and addressed. Also, at the current situation it is much more comfortable and easier to set up an e-wallet than using standalone software on my computer. And if you ask me, it beats the purpose of creating a decentralized currency when in the end the most popular e-wallet services are going to hold most bitcoins and suppose a great security risk.
So I ask you: do you know any solutions to the above mentioned problems? Is there any way to reduce the impact by those hindrances?
And now to the questions:
Since I'm a very inquisitive mind and I'm still very much interested in bitcoins I would like to ask some questions I couldn't find properly answered in the wiki about the nature of the bitcoin system and how exactly it works.
I'd be very grateful if you could answer any of the following questions:
1. What exactly is a bitcoin? A string of text? A hash? A file with a string of text?
2. If I'm not mistaken, a bitcoin wallet is made of a public key and a private key. If I want to transfer my wallet from one program to another or a piece of paper... would I need to export or print out the strings of text that form the bitcoins itself or do I just need those two keys?
3. How does the bitcoin system know how much balance is inside an wallet/account. Does it typically ONLY check it against the chainblock or does it also make use of any bitcoin strings stored inside the wallet?
4. Cryptographically speaking... what happens when I transfer bitcoins?

Edit: Thank you very much for all your answers! I can't reply to all of you (mainly because it's very late over here) but I feel that I understand the concept much better and also feel much more comfortable knowing that the only thing I ever need is my private and public key. It makes me care much less about software and wallet.data files, knowing that I can have everything I need written on piece of paper or saved in an encrypted file of my own. Then, when I need to spend bitcoins or check my balance I can use whatever software I deem best at the moment.

Bootstrapping a bitcoin core wallet

Hi,
I haven't run my wallet (bitcoin-qt) in quite some time and today I decided to open it up. My local copy of the blockchain is 40 weeks behind (yeah, life get's in the way sometimes), and it looks like it will take several days to get up to date.
So I've been looking for the bootstrap.dat file and had a hard time finding it. According to a quora article the reason it's no longer available is that since version 0.10.0 synchronization is faster than downloading and processing the bootstrap file.
I'm running the latest version (0.13.1) and in about 3 hours it got from 40 to 39 weeks behind. I do have quite a hefty pipe at 250 Mbps, so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. I thought that maybe the new "fast synch" doesn't play well with an existing blockchain and only kicks in when it starts from zero, so I renamed the bitcoin dir and started from a new empty one. After seeing it crawl through a couple thousand blocks at roughly the same speed it did with the 40 week-old blockchain, it was clear it wouldn't end in a reasonable time.
So I'm now downloading a bootstrap.dat file I found in this bitcointalk post, but it could very well be a bogus or invalid file. Of course if that's the case it won't sync with the network, but it's a lot of bandwidth and time just to find out, isn't it?
So, my question is: Why isn't the fast synch working? How are unsuspecting newbies supposed to use the core client? If the community is generating boostrap files, why not publish them where they can easily be found?
Meh, I'll have it working in a few hours, but this experience put me in a foul mood. Sorry for the rant.

Reddcoin Weekly Development Update

Welcome again Reddheads to another weekly update of Reddcoin Development.
This month of August will usher in a new era for Reddcoin and its future development.
After 9 months of work, and with the help of volunteers for testing and translations, and with some work provided by the original developers, I am pleased to announce that the new Reddcoin wallet v2.0 is ready to go live onto the main blockchain.
If you are not aware, with this release we have taken a fork from Bitcoin (rather than Litecoin as originally). Using this as a base, it will pave the way for easier feature implementation from the upstream Bitcoin core software that launched most other coins.
Thank you everyone for your patience while this work has been undertaken. And thank you for everyone who took the time to get involved. Over the coming months, the goal will be to introduce more upstream updates into the Reddcoin Core to further improve the Reddcoin network..

I have been saying it for a while now, but I am pleased to announce to you that the new wallet is now ready. I have completed putting the finishing touches and tidying the repository to a point where I feel it is ready for mainstream adoption.

Basic Bitcoin security guide

Hello,
This post is to give you a quick introduction into Bitcoin security. While nobody can guarantee you 100% security, I hope to mitigate some problems you can run into. This is the “20% of effort to get you to 80% safe”.
First of all, you have to determine how much money you want to hold in Bitcoin and how much effort are you willing to put in. If you are happy just holding a few dollars worth and don’t care if you lose them, that’s one approach to take. For everyone else, lets get started.
Password strength
A lot of the times how secure your money is will be determined by the strength of your password. Since in the worst case scenario we are talking about someone trying to brute force your wallet, casual online passwords are too weak. Under 10 characters is too weak. Common words and phrases are too weak. Adding one number to a password at the end is too weak.
Moreover, you can consider your password much weaker if you:

Wallet security
Now we are getting to the meat of things.
There are a number of wallets available to store your hard earned bitcoins. If you have a decent amount of coins to store, you should look into software wallets - BitcoinQT, MultiBit, Armory or Electrum. They are among the best place to store your money safely (provided your computer is secure as well). Chose one you think best suits you, install it and encrypt your wallet file with your strong password. You should take your wallet file and back it up (location of the file is different for different clients, so you have to do some research as to where to find that file). Back it up on a CD, safe USB drive or the like. Keep them safe. If you lose that file, you will lose your money.
A quick word on deterministic wallets. Electrum and Armory allow you to create wallets from a seed. If you use the same seed later, you can recreate your wallet on other machines. With deterministic wallets, you only need to keep that seed secure to have access to your money.
In comparison, in BitcoinQT's traditional wallet, every address you use is random, meaning that after you send 50-100 outgoing transactions your backups can be obsolete. Always keep an up-to-date backup of such wallet file if possible.
Okay, sometimes you need to have your Bitcoins with you when you leave your computer. In this case, you should look into either online or mobile wallets. A staple for both of those is Blockchain.info, but there are others to chose from.
A good rule of thumb with these is to not store more money in them than you can afford to lose. They are best used as a convenient way of accessing some money, not storing your savings. Online wallets are especially vulnerable to their servers getting hacked and people’s money getting stolen.
What to keep in mind while using online wallets:
  • Use a secure password (the more money you have in them the stronger the password should be)
  • Always keep a backup of your wallet in case you need to recover your money
  • Whenever possible, enable two factor authentication
  • Don’t use your online wallets from unsafe computers
Cold storage
Sometimes you want to store your bitcoins for a long time in a safe place. This is called “cold storage”. There are a few ways one can do this.
First of all, paper wallets. They are nice for giving people small bitcoin gifts, but also for long-term storage if properly used. What you want to do is generate and print them offline. You can save the linked page for example and run that offline. If you are really paranoid, you can put it on read-only media and access that from a different computer. For really long term storage, use archival-grade paper.
Another approach to take is using a separate computer for storing your money that is offline 99+% of the time. You could set one up easily by buying an old laptop, reformatting it, installing Linux and a Bitcoin client. Generate an address on that machine and send money to it from your main wallet. Depending on how paranoid you are you can connect that computer to the Internet afterwards to synchronize data with the Bitcoin Network and then turn it off and put it away somewhere safe until it’s needed.
Brain wallets
Don’t. They are not for you. Unless you are a security-conscientious programmer, those are not for you.
Diversifying
Keeping all of your eggs in one basket is never a good thing. You should look into diversifying some of your Bitcoin assets in case your other storage methods fail. Some ways you can diversify:
  • Buy a physical Bitcoin. As long as you trust the coin creator such coins can be an effective cold storage
  • Invest - I wouldn’t recommend this for more than some trivial amount unless you know what you are doing, but investing in some Bitcoin stocks could be a way to get more money out of your bitcoins
How not to diversify:
  • Avoid keeping your bitcoins at exchanges or other online sites that are not your online wallets. Such sites can be closed down or disappear along with your money.
  • Alt-coins - there are few cryptocurrencies that are worthwhile, but most of them are just Bitcoin clones. If a currency brings nothing new, it’s worthless in comparison to Bitcoin. Namecoin is a distributed domain name server (although recently it had a fatal flaw uncovered, so be warned), Ripple is a distributed currency exchange and payment system. Litecoin will only be useful in case Bitcoin’s hashing algorithm gets compromised (very unlikely at this time). Beyond that there are few if any alt-coins that are a worthwhile way of diversifying.
Accepting payments and safety
We’ve covered safe ways to store money, now a quick note about bitcoin payments and their safety.
First of all, when you are sending a transaction, pay your fees. Transactions without fees can take forever to propagate, confirm and clear. This can cause you a lot of stress, so pay your fees.
Secondly, when accepting large Bitcoin payments (say you want to suddenly cash in a gold bar into bitcoins), wait for at the very least 1 confirmation on those transactions. 6 is best, but having even 1 confirmations is a lot better than having none. This is mainly a rule of thumb for the paranoid (I wouldn’t be doing this for most casual transaction), but maybe it will save you if you are dealing with some shady people.

Installed 2nd Bitcoin client and invalidated blockchain progress

Hi, over the last couple of days I synchronized the block chain on an old version of Bitcoin QT where I still had funds in my wallet. It started out 90 weeks behind, then over the course of 4 days updated until it had 23 more weeks to go. At this point any progress stopped, seemingly getting stuck for 24 hours or longer and I couldn't find a solution to make it continue its synchronization.
I then installed Unlimited Bitcoin since I heard that new clients would synchronize much faster. I assumed that both clients would build their block chain separately from each other but the Unlimited Bitcoin installation corrupted any progress that Bitcoin QT had made and upon starting it the next time, it had to re-synchronize now being more than 200 weeks behind.
Unlimited Bitcoin however seems to refer to QT's progress status, also being 200+ weeks behind and not updating any quicker.
What would be the fastest way to get the blockchain up to date on my hard drive in a way that the funds on my QT wallet can be used?

Let me love the Bitcoin, please.

After reading tiny snippets about Bitcoin all the time I decided to take a closer look at it ... and I was floored.
Please don't get me wrong, I really really really want to love the concept, but it seems to be more or less unusable. There are some huge upsides to it: Built on mistrust, fixed amount of money, decentralized system, anonymity and so on. But my reality looked something like this:
Now as you might say, I should have read up on the details (blockchain!) before - but getting started seems to be a big hurdle for the non-geeks out there. Nothing like "get started in seconds!". Even I had some trouble grasping the concept, and I'm sitting in front of a computer for about two decades now.
But wait, there's more! Since my connection is still under heavy load from the client, I could read up on all the things I have missed, and I found some inherent flaws:
For me, Bitcoins could be an awesome form of worldwide, internet-based form of micropayments. The biggest market would be developing countries. But there are technical and legal barriers which push it into a corner for geeks who see conspiracies everywhere and want to crash the system ... which is exactly not what it should be. I read about Ripple, it seems to be a better alternative just because of the possibility for easy money exchanges - and it includes Bitcoin, too.
So, is there something I just don't get yet? I get the impression Bitcoin is a great idea, but just the prototype for something better.

qt-bitcoin wallet issue

Hello,
Not 100% sure if this is the right place or not, but I figured I'd try anyways. I'm new to bitcoin, have an empty wallet, so I'm not worried about losing anything, but I've been having an issue with my wallet, and I'd like to try to get it figured out before I do get some btc going into it. I'm using qt-bitcoin and it started just fine, I was able to synchronized with no problems, but for the last (apparently) 12 days I have been having problems. I went to go look at my wallet to figure out some of my addresses while looking at ways to get bitcoin and get them into my wallet and I noticed that it had become out of sync. Its been trying to synchronization for 12 days unsuccessfully. Its stuck on 277552 current blocks and wont receive anything past that.
I WAS on 0.8.5, and I saw there was an update to 0.8.6. I backed up the wallet, closed it, downloaded the update, installed it, started it, and still nothing. It shows I'm on the latest version, all my addresses are still intact but it just wont update. (running windows 7 x64).

Upgrading and downgrading

How to Upgrade
If you are running an older version, shut it down. Wait until it has completely
shut down (which might take a few minutes for older versions), then run the
installer (on Windows) or just copy over /Applications/Bitcoin-Qt (on Mac) or
bitcoind/bitcoin-qt (on Linux).
Downgrade warning
Because release 0.10.0 and later makes use of headers-first synchronization and
parallel block download (see further), the block files and databases are not
backwards-compatible with pre-0.10 versions of Bitcoin Core or other software:
  • Blocks will be stored on disk out of order (in the order they are
received, really), which makes it incompatible with some tools or
other programs. Reindexing using earlier versions will also not work
anymore as a result of this.
  • The block index database will now hold headers for which no block is
stored on disk, which earlier versions won't support.
If you want to be able to downgrade smoothly, make a backup of your entire data
directory. Without this your node will need start syncing (or importing from
bootstrap.dat) anew afterwards. It is possible that the data from a completely
synchronised 0.10 node may be usable in older versions as-is, but this is not
supported and may break as soon as the older version attempts to reindex.
This does not affect wallet forward or backward compatibility. There are no
known problems when downgrading from 0.11.x to 0.10.x.
Important information

Transaction flooding
At the time of this release, the P2P network is being flooded with low-fee
transactions. This causes a ballooning of the mempool size.
If this growth of the mempool causes problematic memory use on your node, it is
possible to change a few configuration options to work around this. The growth
of the mempool can be monitored with the RPC command getmempoolinfo.
One is to increase the minimum transaction relay fee minrelaytxfee, which
defaults to 0.00001. This will cause transactions with fewer BTC/kB fee to be
rejected, and thus fewer transactions entering the mempool.
The other is to restrict the relaying of free transactions with
limitfreerelay. This option sets the number of kB/minute at which
free transactions (with enough priority) will be accepted. It defaults to 15.
Reducing this number reduces the speed at which the mempool can grow due
to free transactions.
For example, add the following to bitcoin.conf:
minrelaytxfee=0.00005 limitfreerelay=5 
More robust solutions are being worked on for a follow-up release.
Notable changes

Block file pruning
This release supports running a fully validating node without maintaining a copy
of the raw block and undo data on disk. To recap, there are four types of data
related to the blockchain in the bitcoin system: the raw blocks as received over
the network (blk???.dat), the undo data (rev???.dat), the block index and the
UTXO set (both LevelDB databases). The databases are built from the raw data.
Block pruning allows Bitcoin Core to delete the raw block and undo data once
it's been validated and used to build the databases. At that point, the raw data
is used only to relay blocks to other nodes, to handle reorganizations, to look
up old transactions (if -txindex is enabled or via the RPC/REST interfaces), or
for rescanning the wallet. The block index continues to hold the metadata about
all blocks in the blockchain.
The user specifies how much space to allot for block & undo files. The minimum
allowed is 550MB. Note that this is in addition to whatever is required for the
block index and UTXO databases. The minimum was chosen so that Bitcoin Core will
be able to maintain at least 288 blocks on disk (two days worth of blocks at 10
minutes per block). In rare instances it is possible that the amount of space
used will exceed the pruning target in order to keep the required last 288
blocks on disk.
Block pruning works during initial sync in the same way as during steady state,
by deleting block files "as you go" whenever disk space is allocated. Thus, if
the user specifies 550MB, once that level is reached the program will begin
deleting the oldest block and undo files, while continuing to download the
blockchain.
For now, block pruning disables block relay. In the future, nodes with block
pruning will at a minimum relay "new" blocks, meaning blocks that extend their
active chain.
Block pruning is currently incompatible with running a wallet due to the fact
that block data is used for rescanning the wallet and importing keys or
addresses (which require a rescan.) However, running the wallet with block
pruning will be supported in the near future, subject to those limitations.
Block pruning is also incompatible with -txindex and will automatically disable
it.
Once you have pruned blocks, going back to unpruned state requires
re-downloading the entire blockchain. To do this, re-start the node with
  • -reindex. Note also that any problem that would cause a user to reindex (e.g.,
disk corruption) will cause a pruned node to redownload the entire blockchain.
Finally, note that when a pruned node reindexes, it will delete any blk???.dat
and rev???.dat files in the data directory prior to restarting the download.
To enable block pruning on the command line:
  • - -prune=N: where N is the number of MB to allot for raw block & undo data.
Modified RPC calls:
    • getblockchaininfo now includes whether we are in pruned mode or not.
    • getblock will check if the block's data has been pruned and if so, return an
error.
  • - getrawtransaction will no longer be able to locate a transaction that has a
UTXO but where its block file has been pruned.
Pruning is disabled by default.
Big endian support
Experimental support for big-endian CPU architectures was added in this
release. All little-endian specific code was replaced with endian-neutral
constructs. This has been tested on at least MIPS and PPC hosts. The build
system will automatically detect the endianness of the target.
Memory usage optimization
There have been many changes in this release to reduce the default memory usage
of a node, among which:
    • Accurate UTXO cache size accounting (#6102); this makes the option -dbcache
    precise where this grossly underestimated memory usage before
    • Reduce size of per-peer data structure (#6064 and others); this increases the
    number of connections that can be supported with the same amount of memory
    • Reduce the number of threads (#5964, #5679); lowers the amount of (esp.
    virtual) memory needed
Fee estimation changes
This release improves the algorithm used for fee estimation. Previously, -1
was returned when there was insufficient data to give an estimate. Now, -1
will also be returned when there is no fee or priority high enough for the
desired confirmation target. In those cases, it can help to ask for an estimate
for a higher target number of blocks. It is not uncommon for there to be no
fee or priority high enough to be reliably (85%) included in the next block and
for this reason, the default for -txconfirmtarget=n has changed from 1 to 2.
Privacy: Disable wallet transaction broadcast
This release adds an option -walletbroadcast=0 to prevent automatic
transaction broadcast and rebroadcast (#5951). This option allows separating
transaction submission from the node functionality.
Making use of this, third-party scripts can be written to take care of
transaction (re)broadcast:
    • Send the transaction as normal, either through RPC or the GUI
    • Retrieve the transaction data through RPC using gettransaction (NOT
    getrawtransaction). The hex field of the result will contain the raw
    hexadecimal representation of the transaction
    • The transaction can then be broadcasted through arbitrary mechanisms
    supported by the script
One such application is selective Tor usage, where the node runs on the normal
internet but transactions are broadcasted over Tor.

Privacy: Stream isolation for Tor
This release adds functionality to create a new circuit for every peer
connection, when the software is used with Tor. The new option,
-proxyrandomize, is on by default.

How do I turn my wallet.dat file into something I can actually use?

So here's my situation: I have a wallet.dat file that contains my Bitcoin and I have it backed up well and wrote the password down.
So here I am, thinking I did everything correctly and I could just sit on it without having to carry out any maintenance, but then I look today and realize the blockchain is now 96 gigabyte big and still exponentially growing.
So, I can't maintain a full node anymore, I'm about 60 gigabyte behind probably. No problem, I have my wallet.dat file.
But here it comes: Lightweight clients refuse to work with the wallet.dat file. All I see everywhere are people telling me to do geeky commandline shit. If it involves github, I'm out. The alternative I'm given is to export my private keys to blockchain, which seems like the dumbest thing possible and not secure at all. I'm also told to simply send my Bitcoin through Bitcoin-qt to a new wallet. The thing of course is, that would require me to first synchronize my Bitcoin-qt client, which will take an eternity.
So, the suggestions I see are to use Pywallet from Github to dump my private keys into an unprotected json file on my computer. Who could possibly think of that as genuinely safe or user-friendly?
Why is it so hard for you guys to make a lightweight bitcoin client that can open my wallet.dat file?

[Beginner] Questions so stupid I should have made a throwaway

Let's get the most embarrassing question out of the way first. Yesterday I downloaded my first ever crypto wallet Dogecoin qt-1.6. It was 14 weeks behind so I ran it several hours until it was synchronized. Closed the window once syncing was complete, and now I don't know how/where to access it after searching my computer for the file/program. I understand that this question is so dumb that there's no search results on /dogecoin or google, but: Where on my computer is that empty wallet that I synced for hours yesterday? It's obvious I'm not understanding what a Wallet is since I don't know where to find it after running the exe.
I want to buy my first dogecoins. I have no other cryptocurrency, this would be my first, and I'm getting the sense that dogecoin is not for new users who can't mine, but for people who are already in the crypto market with bitcoin/litecoin and can convert these into dogecoin. Is this a reasonable assumption, being that I can't just buy dogecoin with credit card/bank account? I made an account on Coinmkt.com and they will only allow purchase through ego pay, ok pay or money order. Searching reddit for how to buy, I found a recommendation of cash -> coinbase -> BTC-e -> Litecoin -> wallet, so is it the same for dogecoin? I have made a Coinbase account, but I'm starting to feel that this "club" is turning out to be a bit more exclusive than I had anticipated and while I don't mind doing some work before I can participate, the barriers for entry are making me second guess whether a total crypto newb is really welcome to jump in without first being serious about Bitcoin to get access. Am I off-base? (I'm a little discouraged but not ready to give up).
Edit: You guys are amazing, and I was able to find my dogecoin files (the appdata\roaming folder was hidden), set the dogecoin.exe as a shortcut on my desktop, and am going to give Coinbase a try for buying some bitcoin that I can convert to dogecoin. (I assume there's a tutorial on how to go from Coinbase btc to Doge somewhere?). An hour ago I felt like an outsider, and now I'm looking forward to being part of this community rather than just a confused lurker.
Final question for today if anyone sees it: Would Dropbox be an ok place to keep a backup of my wallet once I get some funds in it?
